The 1840-05-A3 is a Bourns Signal and Dataline Protector designed to protect sensitive electronic circuits and components from damaging surge voltages and currents with a maximum breakdown voltage of 8V (line-to-line and line-to-ground). It employs a multi-staged protection architecture featuring a solid-state 3rd stage protection component with sub-nanosecond response time, a primary 3-electrode gas discharge tube capable of handling 20,000 ampere lightning currents, and a Bourns TBU High-Speed Protector (HSP) as a 2nd stage that transitions to high impedance when current exceeds 300 mA. The protector offers low peak clamping voltage, repeated surge protection capability up to rated limits, and operates over a temperature range of -40°C to +60°C with a response time less than 1 microsecond. It is particularly suitable for protecting signal and datalines in computer, data communication, instrumentation, broadcasting, and industrial control applications, and is compatible with EIA standard interfaces including RS-232, RS-422, RS-423, RS-485, and 4-20 mA instrumentation loops.
